9th Annual Charity Campaign Supporting Widows and Orphans
Originally known as and inspired by the Shield of David Orphanage Home, this charity fund was established nine years ago in memory of my grandmother, Alice Rishty, and her sisters A"H.In the 1920s and 1930s, my grandmother was one of six sisters who grew up in an orphanage called the "Shield of David". Thanks to the tremendous support from the Jewish community, these girls overcame all odds, and each went on to build families that are now the heart and soul of our community today.
Every year, we collect funds that are distributed directly to widowed and orphaned families in need of financial assistance, especially as the holidays of Purim and Pesach approach.
Under the guidance of our community's rabbis, 100% of the money raised will go directly to these families who are in desperate need of support.
Here are what a few of the gedolim say on the significance of supporting orphans and widows:
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (Igrot Moshe, Yoreh De'ah 2:134):
"The obligation to support orphans and widows is not just a mitzvah, but also a means of drawing closer to Hashem. By helping them, we emulate God's mercy and kindness, as He is the true Father to orphans and the judge of widows."

Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (Chafetz Chaim):
"One who gives charity to orphans and widows is as if they have fulfilled the entire Torah, because they are demonstrating God's love and mercy for His creation."
"הנותן צדקה ליתומים ואלמנות כאילו קיים את כל התורה כולה, משום שהוא מראה את אהבתו ורחמיו של ה' על בריאתו."
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Minchat Shlomo 1:28):
"The mitzvah of supporting orphans and widows holds a special place in the eyes of Hashem, and the reward for this mitzvah is immense. Not only do we elevate the lives of those in need, but we also raise our own spiritual level in the process."
