In 1998, Minyan Shelanu was born as a center for struggling teens who could not find their place in the local Lakewood community.
Founded by Rabbi Chaim Y. Abadi, "The Minyan" quickly evolved into a space of healing, love, acceptance and growth. A place where the teens of our community know they can come at any time, be who they are and be loved for it. When anyone comes into The Minyan they know there will be no judgment, only acceptance and space to grow into who he is meant to be.
Today, many of our teens are Torah scholars, business leaders, and - most importantly - happy, thriving adults.
In recent years, the Minyan's daily programming has been evolving and expanding to keep pace with our community's rapid growth, from Lakewood, Jackson, Toms River and beyond. Minyan Shelanu may have started with the teens, but is now full service. Offering help to adults struggling with addiction, marriage & dating coaching, and all the difficult things that may come up. The cost of life-saving services like rehab and therapy have risen dramatically and we are straining to keep up with over $3 million in yearly expenses.
In the 25 years since inception, over 1000 boys and girls have passed through our doors. There is no question as to the necessity for an organization like Minyan Shelanu to exist. Whether it be a neighbor, a sibling, a cousin, a classmate, everyone knows someone who has been to, and helped by The Minyan. It is time for us as a collective community to keep the Minyan home close to heart. To support the teens who feel like The Minyan is, for right now, the only place they can call home.
If we do it together, we can continue to provide the boys and girls who may be struggling, with a place to call home, a place like Minyan Shelanu.
