WHAT IS CROHN'S DISEASE AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS?

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, known as Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are invisible illnesses, and are genetically complex (with Ashkenazi Jews having an incidence of the disease at 4-5 times the general population), chronic, painful conditions that have debilitating physical and psychological effects. Prejudicial assumptions and confusion create even larger hurdles for our patients who grapple with cultural and psychological stereotyping. Yet our patients try their best to have full lives and meet their responsibilities and the expectations of the community. Patients face special issues in coping with the symptoms and side effects of their IBD. Combine this with the cloak of shame and secrecy surrounding any chronic and genetic disorder in the Jewish communities, and the outcomes for patients are truly calamitous and actually life-threatening. Those inflicted, struggle not only with the physical symptoms and pain, but also with the unknown. Those that battle this invisible disease never know what the next day, hour, or moment will bring.

JCCares

JCCSG is now faced with the need to expand their services with the goal of creating a network of support for Crohn's and Colitis sufferers and their loved ones.

In addition to the help of providing post-surgical respite services, helping with expensive medical appointments, JCCSG is expanding to provide services such as getaway retreats, life coaching, coping skills, emotional support, cleaning help, suppers, and babysitting for those needing to travel for endless appointments and on-going hospital stays.

For many of our patients, living in secrecy and suffering in silence, JCCSG is their only source of support.

Help raise awareness for these invisible illnesses. With hundreds relying on JCCSG for help, JCCSG needs your help to expand their efforts exponentially.
