Think listening isn’t hard?
Try it with a child who lost a parent and wants to share their pain.
I’m Sarah Rivkah Kohn, and I was that girl. Today, I run Links, the organization I founded 14 years ago to support bereaved children.
Links, and its boys’ division, Shlomie’s Club, is an international organization that serves over 1,100 families, providing support for boys and girls from preschool through young adulthood. With multiple programs including events, weekend retreats, referrals, monthly publications, and a hotline, the core of what we do at Links & Shlomie’s Club is … listen.
And it’s astonishingly effective. Listening allows us to identify and provide what each child needs — their unique struggles connected to the loss — allowing them to move forward from the trauma of losing a parent.
Tragically, COVID-19 has kept us busier than we’ve ever been: We’ve added 297 new children from 83 new families to our caseload over the last few months. And all this while our donations stalled due to the economic downturn and canceled parlor meetings.
We don’t ever turn a child away but it’s become increasingly difficult to service new families without an increase in our case management staff, programming, and — budget.
None of this can happen without your help. For the next 48 hours, we’ll be working to raise $350,000 so we can continue to serve the children we work with.
Donate now so we can listen to the children who need us.
