Guests of Honor Mr. Chaim Lebovits Mr. Mordy Serle Mr. Aryeh Leib Freedman
The COVID Plasma Initiative was founded when Chaim Lebovits, a shoe wholesaler in New York, teamed up with Mordy Serle, a lawyer, to further plasma treatment for COVID-19 patients. Through the community's dedication and collective efforts, COVID Plasma Initiative started making connections between patients, plasma donors, and hospitals and physicians with the goal of making convalescent COVID-19 plasma accessible to as many COVID patients as possible. These men marshaled the efforts of a large group of volunteers and community organizations and successfully launched a plasma donor network. COVID Plasma Initiative and its affiliates have recruited thousands of potential donors and are responsible for making convalescent plasma the national treatment of choice for hospitalized patients.
Another mover, Aryeh Leib Freedman, whose wife is a former Clevelander, hails from Baltimore, Maryland. Experienced in organizing several plasma drives in Baltimore and beyond, and founder of the Maryland COVID Initiative, he reached out to Bikur Cholim of Cleveland. Together with Chaim Lebovits and Mordy Serle, these three devoted and goal-oriented men focused on saving lives of COVID patients. They advised and provided encouragement and information to the Cleveland community as they organized a highly successful plasma drive in Cleveland which collected lifesaving plasma.
The monumental efforts of these three devoted pioneers have changed the face of the virus and have saved so many lives all over the United States. They are indeed COVID's game-changers! It is with deepest appreciation that we recognize and honor Chaim Lebovits, Mordechai Serle, and Areyeh Leib Freedman for their lifesaving efforts for the city of Cleveland and far beyond.
DEDICATION OF BARBARA GROSS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Mrs. Barbara Gross a'h
Mrs. Barbara Gross, a”h, was an integral and beloved member of the Cleveland Jewish community. Her life revolved around the pursuit of myriad avenues of chesed, acts of kindness. Wherever she saw a need, she invested time and effort to fill the gap, always with her signature caring and sensitive touch. Barbara had a special gift for creative and artistic expression. She used these talents from Hashem to assist the community and individuals alike. Barbara recognized the need for a centerpiece gemach, a lending service to loan out centerpieces for weddings and special occasions, and immediately organized one. To let the service run at full capacity, she created the centerpieces. Delivering them to any simcha or dinner that needed them was just part of everyday life for her. In the early days of the Cleveland Chevra Kadisha, Cleveland’s Jewish burial society, manning the phones day and night was her job with the Chevra Kadisha phone line in her home. Barbara was involved in designing a new Mikvah, the ritual immersion bath, and was always eager and willing to decorate a local synagogue or a neighbor’s home.
Her kindness for brides and their family members was legendary. As an expert seamstress, Barbara would offer her skills and talents to many members of the community. She toiled many hours for young brides to ensure that they felt like a queen in a custom-fitted gown on the wedding day. There was never a charge for services or material. Anticipating possible “emergency” fixes, Barbara would often attend weddings equipped with a needle and thread!
Bikur Cholim held a special place in Barbara’s heart. For many years she was one of Bikur Cholim’s devoted, dedicated volunteers, visiting patients in local hospitals and providing an assortment of foods for distribution to patients and caregivers.
How fitting it is to perpetuate her deep commitment as a volunteer by creating the Barbara Gross Volunteer Program, which will enable Bikur Cholim to expand its volunteer base and increase engagement, helping this program grow. We are indebted to Barbara for her past involvement and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Gross, and their four married children, the Grosses, Lundners, and Newmans, to continue her legacy. We recognize Dr. Gross and his family and invite the entire community to join them in celebrating the memory of Barbara by supporting Bikur Cholim and standing behind its army of over 500 volunteers.
